In Wednesday Kim’s series Heap up ashes (2020) the artist drops us deep within a Bosch inspired landscape of the subconscious, through which a young girl and her ghostly electric shadow carry a semi-translucent giant crustacean.
In part one of the series, Kim’s protagonist pair make their way through a daylight version of the scene, with the etched line of lightning cleaving through the cloud strewn sky. With a left-foot raised the figure makes her way through a blood red lake, all around surrounded by rotting apple cores, lychees, dolls and a trail-mix assortment of nuts.
Recalling North Korea’s 2016 threat to turn Seoul and Washington into a “heap of ashes” Kim’s series mixes a religious excess with a stark vision of humanity.
